Key Stage 1 and Phonics Results – 2018
The Department for Education (DfE) published statistics in September 2018 detailing pupil attainment in the phonics screening check and key stage 1 national curriculum teacher assessments (TA).
Attainment in teacher assessments were broadly similar to that seen in 2017.
Due to the changes in the Writing TA introduced in the 2017/18 writing frameworks direct comparison against past attainment can not be made. With this in mind 70% of all pupils reached the expected standard against the Writing TA.
Performance for pupils classified by the DfE as being either disadvantaged or eligible for free school meals (FSM) continued to perform consistently poorer than their peers. This was particularly evident against the Writing TA where the percentage of pupils meeting the expected standard was 19 percentage points lower for disadvantaged pupils and 20 percentage points lower for FSM pupils.
Moving on to the phonics screening 82% of pupils (more than 4 in 5) met the expected standard in the phonics screening check in year 1. This was up slightly from 2017. By the end of year 2 the same proportion of pupils, 92% (more than 9 in 10 pupils), had met the expected standard as in 2017.
Again pupils from the disadvantaged and FSM categories performed worse than their peers in the phonics screening. By the end of year 1 on 72% (-13 percentage points) of disadvantaged met the expected standard, with 70% (-14 percentage points) of FSM meeting the expected standard. This gap reduced by the end of year 2 with there only being a 9 percentage point difference for both categories meeting the expected standard.
