Coasting Measures 2017
KS2 Coasting Measure
Primary schools will be ‘coasting’ in 2017 if they fall below the following standards in all of the three years:
- In 2015: fewer than 85% of pupils achieve a level 4 in English reading, writing and maths and below the national median percentage of pupils make expected progress in all of English reading, writing and maths
- In 2016 and 2017: fewer than 85% of pupils achieve the expected standard (a scaled score of 100) in all of English reading, writing and maths and average progress scores for pupils are below a progress threshold. In 2016 this was -2.5 in English reading or -2.5 in maths or -3.5 in English writing.
The 2017 thresholds will be announced in autumn 2017 (the suggestion is they may well be the same as 2016).
KS4 Coasting Measure
Secondary schools will be identified as ‘coasting’ in 2017 if they fall below the following standards in all of the three years:
- In 2015: fewer than 60% of pupils achieve 5A*-C at GCSE (including English and maths) and less than the national median percentage achieve expected progress in English and maths
- In 2016 and 2017: the progress 8 score is below a set threshold (and the upper band of the confidence interval of the score is below 0). In 2016 this threshold was -0.25, and the threshold for 2017 will be announced in autumn 2017.
